Has Roberto Martinez made a mistake picking Cristiano Ronaldo?

Newly appointed Portugal boss Roberto Martinez stood defiant in his choice to pick 38-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo in their upcoming matches.

The Al-Nassr forward has been picked in Portugal’s squad for their Euro 2024 qualifiers against Liechtenstein and Luxembourg this month.

After Portugal got eliminated by Morocco in the quarter-finals, Ronaldo left the pitch in tears and many feared that would be his final game at international level.

With Martinez leaving Belgium on a disappointing note, the question begs, does Ronaldo still have what it takes to take Portugal to the next level?

With the vast array of young attacking talent at Portugal, is Ronaldo really needed or is it now a thing of sentiment more than anything?

Portugal host Liechtenstein on 23 March and are away to Luxembourg three days later.

Ronaldo, who has scored a men’s record 118 goals in 196 appearances for Portugal, left Manchester United in November following a controversial interview in which he criticised the club before joining Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr on a free transfer in January.
