A 13-year-old has become the youngest person to play professional football in USA

Da’vian Kimbrough, a 13-year-old prodigy, has etched his name into the annals of American soccer history, or football if you are from outside of the USA.

On a crisp Sunday evening, with a crowd roaring in approval at Heart Health Park, Kimbrough stepped onto the field as a substitute in the 87th minute for Sacramento Republic, making him the youngest person ever to play professional football in the United States.

Kimbrough’s remarkable feat shattered the previous record held by Axel Kei, who made his professional debut for Real Monarchs at the age of 13 years, nine months, and nine days in October 2021.

Now, at just 13 years, seven months, and 13 days old, Kimbrough has achieved what many can only dream of at such a tender age.

The historic moment occurred during a USL Championship match against Las Vegas Lights, where Sacramento Republic triumphed with a 2-0 victory. The USL Championship stands as the second-highest tier of professional football in the United States, just below the Major League Soccer (MLS). Kimbrough’s inclusion in the match symbolizes not only his extraordinary talent but also the growing recognition of youth development in American soccer.

Kimbrough’s ascent to professional football stardom is marked by his incredible journey. In 2021, at the age of just 11, he made waves by scoring an astounding 27 goals in 31 appearances for Sacramento’s under-13 team. His prodigious talent was undeniable, and it was only a matter of time before he would make the leap to the professional ranks.

Moreover, Kimbrough’s dedication to his craft extends beyond domestic competition. He participated in a training camp with Mexico’s Under-16 team, showcasing his potential on an international stage as well.

His ability to compete with players several years older than him speaks volumes about his skill and maturity on the pitch.

Sunday’s victory against Las Vegas Lights not only marked Kimbrough’s historic debut but also propelled Sacramento Republic to a commanding position in the USL Western Conference.

With just two games remaining in the regular season, they sit three points clear at the top of the table and have secured a spot in the season-ending playoffs.
