Micah Richards has jumped to the defence of Manchester City star Phil Foden as he was subject to heavy criticism online over his performance against Serbia in their opening match of Euro 2024.
The Real Madrid midfielder scored the only goal of the match in a dull England performance.
The Manchester City starlet seemed to struggle throughout the Three Lions’ 1-0 win against Serbia but his teammate Jude Bellingham seemed on top form after taking the central role.
Former City defender Micah Richards jumped to defend Foden, blaming the England system and his position in the squad.
Foden was often caught drifting in the left wing but hardly had any impact on the match, the 24-year-old was a shadow of his usual self but it made the BBC Sport pundit ‘sad’.
Phil Foden has had a tremendous season for Manchester City, his best in a blue shirt and under Pep Guardiola he can express himself freely but in this England side it’s like he’s trapped in a system that just doesn’t work for him.
Cesc Fabregas said that a player of his quality should know how to perform regardless of system and position and mentioned about Jude’s role on the match.
