Mesut Ozil announces retirement from football aged 34

Former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil has announced his retirement from football, aged 34.

He started his career at Schalke 04 before moving to Werder Bremen, where he established himself as one of the best playmakers in the world.

The former Germany midfielder burst onto the scene during the 2010 World Cup where he impressed and landed himself a deal at Real Madrid shortly after.

He won the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey with Real Madrid before moving to Arsenal in 2013 for a then club-record fee of £42.5 million.

He went on to make 184 league appearances for the Gunners, scoring 33 goals and providing many assists.

In January 2021, Ozil left Arsenal to join Fenerbahce, where he has continued to play at a high level but injuries plagued his time in Turkey.
