Neal Maupay has trolled Everton upon being on the verge of leaving the Merseyside-based side for Olympique Marseille.
The French striker joined Everton from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022 but failed to hit the ground running, making 32 appearances and finding the back just once.
Maupay moved to Brentford last summer on loan which was his second stint at the club but also failed to make an impression as he managed just six goals in the Premier League.
As revealed by Fabrizio Romano, the 28-year-old is now set to join Marseille on a season long-loan, a confirmation that he is going to spend a second consecutive season away from Goodison Park.
Reacting to Romano’s report on his imminent move to Marseille, Maupay uploaded a clip from the movie”Shawshank Redemption” where one of the characters of the movie Andy Dufresne was celebrating breaking out of the season.
This gesture from the former France youth has been interpreted to mean that he is relieved about leaving Everton.
The former Brighton forward has been a controversial figure on social media, grabbing the headlines during his feud with James Maddison and most recently calling out fans who attacked Everton players after their 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
Maupay started his career in France with OGC Nice before moving to Saint-Étienne where he left in 2017 for Brentford and is now set to return to his native country.
He is expected to compete with former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood for a place in Marseille’s team.
