Liverpool flop Christian Benteke has beaten Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez to the 2023/2024 Major League Soccer Golden Boot.
The Belgian star scored 23 goals in 30 games for D.C. United, three more than his closest challengers Messi, Suárez and Los Angeles’ Denis Bouanga to scoop the top scorer’s prize.
Benteke joined D.C. United in 2022 but wasn’t as prolific in his first season as he was in the just-concluded campaign, registering 14 goals in 31 games in his debut campaign
The former Liverpool forward has taken to social media to celebrate his latest feat
“My God My Strength My Name My Career My Story My Wins My Loses My Ups and Downs My Golden boot.”
“With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” he wrote on his X account
Having moved from Aston Villa to Liverpool in 2015, the Belgium international was abysmal during his stay with the Reds, managing 10 goals in 42 games.
Messi and Suárez would have no regret in not winning the Golden Boot, having helped Inter Miami win the Supporters’ Shield, finishing atop the Major League Soccer standings with a record-breaking 74 points.
The duo will now have to reproduce his brilliance in the playoffs to help Inter Miami win the Major League Soccer Cup.
