Manchester United are currently in discussions with veteran defender Jonny Evans about extending his contract at the club but they are also in talks with another veteran player over signing a contract extension.
The 36-year-old, who rejoined United last summer from Leicester City, has impressed both fans and the coaching staff with his performances and leadership on the field.
Evans’ return to Old Trafford came eight years after his initial departure from the club. Initially brought back to train and maintain fitness during the pre-season, Evans’ commitment and form during training sessions convinced manager Erik ten Hag to offer him a one-year contract.
This decision proved fruitful as Evans went on to make 30 appearances throughout the season. Notably, he played a crucial role in United’s FA Cup victory against Manchester City at Wembley, coming on as a substitute to help secure the win.
Club’s Strategy and Contract Negotiations
The club’s decision to potentially extend Evans’ stay aligns with their broader strategy of maintaining a balance between experienced players and emerging talents. Evans’ experience and understanding of the club’s ethos make him a valuable asset, both on and off the pitch.
In addition to negotiations with Evans, Manchester United are also in talks with goalkeeper Tom Heaton regarding a new deal. Heaton has provided reliable backup in the goalkeeping department and the club sees value in his continued presence.
Meanwhile, the club has offered a new contract to promising youngster Omari Forson. The 19-year-old forward made his Premier League debut in a thrilling 4-3 victory against Wolves in February, where he notably assisted Kobbie Mainoo’s winning goal. Forson made six further appearances, showcasing his potential, though he has yet to commit to the new deal offered by United.
As part of their squad restructuring, Manchester United have confirmed that Brandon Williams, Anthony Martial, and Raphael Varane will be released when their contracts expire on June 30. Williams, who spent the last season on loan at Ipswich Town, has not played since December 29 due to an injury that led to his early return to United. His last appearance for the club dates back to September 2022.
