Who are the front runners for the vacant England managerial role?

With Gareth Southgate’s decision to vacate his position as England’s manager upon losing to Spain in Euro 2024 final, a host of names have been suggested as his replacement.

Southgate became the Three Lions manager in 2016, succeeding Sam Allardyce after the latter left his position having been involved in a corruption scandal.

Gareth Southgate wrote a heartfelt statement on the official England Football team website:

As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all.

But it’s time for change, and for a new chapter. Sunday’s final in Berlin against Spain was my final game as England manager.

Under his stewardship, England got to back-to-back finals in the European championship for the first time and he also led the country to a fourth-place finish at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Former Chelsea managers Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel as well as erstwhile Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp and Manchester City gaffer Pep Guardiola are among the names to have been mentioned.

Despite achieving a great deal of success, he has been criticized for not being able to get the best out of a talented squad that includes quality class players like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka, Trent Alexander-Arnold and a host of others.

The job of finding the 53-year-old replacement won’t be an easy one based on the names that have been listed particularly with Klopp and Guardiola with the latter being the most difficult.

Regardless, in Lampard, Tuchel, Lee Carsley who is the coach of the U21s and Graham Potter, the Football Association still have a wealth of options to choose from.
