Former footballer Joey Barton, aged 41, has denied charges of making malicious communications in relation to social media posts directed at sports pundit Eni Aluko.
The charges allege that Barton conveyed an indecent or offensive message between January 3 and January 8, 2024, about Aluko, who is a former women’s footballer and current broadcaster.
Barton, who has had a prominent career in English football, appeared at Warrington Magistrates’ Court where he confirmed his name, address, and date of birth to Deputy Senior District Judge Tan Ikram. He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
During the hearing, Judge Ikram imposed a conditional bail, stipulating that Barton must not mention Eni Aluko on any social media platform, either directly or indirectly. The judge emphasized, “I am imposing that condition to ensure no further offences are created.”
Barton acknowledged the conditions set by the judge as he departed the courtroom alongside his defence solicitor, Richard Derby. The case is set to proceed to Liverpool Crown Court, with Barton required to appear on August 27.
Eni Aluko, the subject of the alleged offensive posts, is a notable figure in both football and broadcasting. She enjoyed a distinguished playing career, featuring prominently for Chelsea and the England national team.
Aluko scored 33 international goals in 102 appearances before retiring in 2020. Since then, she has transitioned successfully into a career as a sports pundit.
Joey Barton’s football career, marked by a blend of talent and controversy, began in 2002 with Manchester City.
He went on to play for several other clubs, including Newcastle United, Queens Park Rangers, and Marseille, and had a brief stint with the England national team, earning one cap.
Following his playing days, Barton moved into management, taking roles at Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers. He departed from his managerial position at Rovers in 2023 and has not taken up a new role since.
