Bayern Munich unlikely to spend €70 MILLION securing Joao Cancelo

Recent reports suggest that Bayern Munich will NOT be looking to spend the €70 million required to keep Joao Cancelo at the Allianz Arena when his loan spell is up at the end of the season.

Cancelo joined Bayern on loan from City at the end of January this year. He stated that the reason he wanted to make the move was to get more game time. However, it seems that his time in Munich has not gone as planned, and he is reportedly already frustrated at his lack of start under boss Julian Nagelsmann.

He has yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Bayern in the Bundesliga and has made 2 starts for the club in his 4 appearances. He sat out their last game against Stuttgart on the 4th of March and it is now also being reported that he will be starting on the bench for their last-16 second leg in the Champions League.

The reported decision to not invest in keeping Cancelo at the Allianz Arena could in part be due to the fact that the club are already well stacked, with an array of quality defenders including Upamecano, Pavard and Kimmich.

Cancelo’s 70 million euro price tag is a significant investment, and the club may be looking to allocate their resources into other areas of their squad. Sadly for the Portuguese star, the grass has turned out to be no greener than that at the Etihad in terms of his playing time.

The defender had a reported bust up with City chief, Pep Guardiola – something that Cancelo himself has since denied as being true – that many consider to be the reason for his last minute move to Munich. With his contract running up until 2027 with City, it will be interesting to see how happy a return it is for Cancelo to the Etihad, should Bayern indeed refuse to purchase him.
