No one would have predicted that Danny Drinkwater would be working at a building site, eight years after helping Leicester win their first ever Premier League title.
The retired English midfielder had helped the Foxes regain promotion to the top-flight in the 2013/2014 campaign, and named in the PFA Championship team of the Year before helping them grab the Premier League crown two seasons later.
It was this pedigree that earned a move to Chelsea in 2017 and that marked the beginning the end of his career, as he failed to make an impact in West London.
In an article published in 2020 by ESPN, Drinkwater’s move to Chelsea was ranked as the second worst ever transfer in Premier League history, to the surprise of no one.
He made just 12 Premier League appearances in his first season with the Blues, with a calf strain injury ruling him out for a large chunk of the season.
The former England international would struggle with injuries again in the 2018/2019 season and made just one appearance for Chelsea throughout the campaign.
Fed up with his niggling injuries, the Blues decided to send him on loan to Burnley in the summer of 2019 but his injury history didn’t improve as he made just two appearances for the Clarets.
Burnley didn’t extend his loan term when it expired in January 2020 which led to his move to Aston Villa but featured in just four games at the club before the expiration of his loan deal.
Loan moves to Kasimpasa and Reading had no impact on him and was eventually shown the exit door upon the expiration of his contract in June 2022.
Having stayed clubless over a year since leaving Stamford Bridge, he eventually announced his retirement in October, 2023.
Upon his exit from professional football, he went into the restaurant business but recorded no success and had to close the restaurant in 2022.
Last month, his investment in a nightclub went down the drain as the nightclub closed its operations obviously for the lack of sales.
This has led him to working on a building site as seen he shared in a recent picture on Instagram, a decision that has got people talking.
Danny Drinkwater has responded and he stated that he enjoys working on building sites and its always been a passion of his.
