We all love a a good comeback story right? … Even better when it’s also an underdog’s tale?
It’s the 2003 / 2004 Champions League quarter finals.
Italian giants and reigning champions AC Milan (boasting a squad that includes Kaka, Seedorf, Pirlo and Crespo to name just a few) have drawn Spanish outfit Deportivo la Coruna.
The first leg is played and the expected outcome is received – AC Milan dominate with a 4-1 victory at the San Siro.
All is looking very bleak for Deportivo.
Milan came to the Riazor feeling understandably confident with their comfortable 3 goal lead. This did not however deter the Spanish squad, who came out so strong in the first half of their home leg that by the time the whistle blew for half time they were (to the surprise of all watching) ahead by 3 goals to nil!
This levelled the aggregate score and, due to the away goal claimed by Deportivo at their visit to the San Siro, had them as winning the round and moving onto the semi finals as things stood!
Within 45 minutes they had turned the tables on one of the biggest clubs in the world in that time and reminded everyone that anything can happen in the beautiful game.
They were also not content with stopping there…
For good measure, Deportivo La Coruna scored one more goal, sealing their victory and place in the semi finals of the tournament. This would be as far as they would get this particular year, as Portuguese side Porto FC would dispatch them in a closely-fought 1-0 defeat in the following round.
We would like to think that they still went home with a smile on their faces knowing that they had denied the super squad of AC Milan a place in the finals of that year’s Champions League.
