Inter Miami are to sign Spanish defender and Barcelona legend Jordi Alba.
The club’s president, Jorge Mas, announced that the 34-year-old full-back has signed a contract and is expected to be available for the upcoming match against Atlanta on Tuesday.
Jordi Alba’s move to Inter Miami comes after his departure from Barcelona in the summer, following the expiration of his contract.
During his illustrious career with the Spanish giants, Alba spent over a decade with the club, participating in 459 matches and netting 27 goals.
His contributions played a crucial role in Barcelona’s triumphs, including six La Liga titles and the historic Champions League victory in 2015.
The allure of Inter Miami’s project in the MLS, along with the opportunity to reunite with former teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets, proved to be compelling for Jordi Alba.
Both Messi and Busquets had already made their moves to the United States, signing deals with Inter Miami until 2025.
In a moment of excitement and fanfare, the two players were presented to an exuberant crowd of approximately 20,000 Inter Miami supporters at the club’s DRV PNK Stadium on a joyous Sunday event, where they were joined by co-owner and former England captain, David Beckham.
As Messi and Busquets settle into their new surroundings, their former teammate, Luis Suarez, is rumoured to be another potential addition to the Inter Miami roster.
The 36-year-old Uruguayan striker, who currently plays for Brazil’s Gremio, has been linked to a potential move to the MLS club.
Suarez, who played alongside Messi, Busquets, and Alba during his tenure at Barcelona from 2014 to 2020, could join his former teammates in the United States if negotiations between Inter Miami and Gremio prove fruitful.
Regarding the speculation surrounding Suarez’s potential transfer, Jorge Mas clarified that while there has been a lot of talk, no direct discussions have taken place with Gremio or the player himself.
Nevertheless, if Suarez becomes available for a move, Inter Miami will be keen to explore the possibility of bringing him on board to further strengthen their squad.
Fans of Inter Miami eagerly anticipate the potential debut of Lionel Messi, who recently trained with his new teammates for the first time and is expected to make his first appearance for the club in a Leagues Cup game against Cruz Azul on Friday.
