Hansi Flick’s side needed to rely on the results from the Japan v Spain game which ended in a shock 2-1 victory for Japan after VAR controversy.

Germany ended the group in 3rd place behind 2nd placed Spain on goal difference because of the Spaniards crushing 7-0 victory over Costa Rica in the first group match.
