Picture: The Zirkzee moment that cost Manchester United against Brighton

Manchester United’s new signing Joshua Zirkzee grabbed the headline for the wrong reason during the Red Devils’ 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League early kick-off game played on Saturday at the Falmer Stadium.

Former Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck grabbed the opening goal for the home side in the 32nd minute, putting the ball home from close range to score his 100th career goal.

On the hour mark, Amad Diallo restored parity for the Red Devils, striking a deflected shot into the net from Noussair Mazraoui’s pass before Zirkzee grabbed the headline in a way he couldn’t have wanted.

In the 72nd minute, Alejandro Garnacho thought he had put Erik ten Hag’s men ahead but the ball hit Zirkzee on the way in and after a VAR check, the Dutchman was deemed offside.

This would prove costly as Brighton got a late winning goal in stoppage time through João Pedro’s header on the far post, courtesy of a cross from substitute Simon Adingra.

Zirkzee was the hero last week when Manchester United got the new Premier League season underway with a victory over Fulham, scoring the only goal in the clash.

Nine days after debuting, the former Bologna forward became a Villain.
