Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Bentancur charged by FA over Son racial slur

The English Football Association have charged Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentacur for using a racial slur against teammate Son Heung-Min.

The FA have charged the Uruguayan midfielder for “ an alleged breach of FA rule E3 for misconduct about a media interview.

Bentacur appeared on Uruguayan TV in June and the presenter asked for a Tottenham jersey and he replied:

“Sonny’s? It could be Sonny’s cousin too as they all look the same”

The 27-year-old has since apologized for using such words but the FA are seemingly ready to sanction him for his actions.

By the rule of natural justice, Bentacur has the chance to respond to the charge until Thursday, September 19.

If found guilty, he could be banned for up to 12 games, thereby ruling him out of action for Spurs till December.

The 27-year-old is one of Ange Postecoglou’s most trusted midfield lieutenants and his absence will be a big blow for Tottenham’s ambition for the season.

Thankfully, Postecoglou can call on the former Juventus midfielder for the North London Derby against Arsenal on Sunday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bentacur has been struggling for the past two seasons, no thanks to his recurrent injuries which made him miss a host of games.

In the 2022/2023 season, he made just 18 appearances in the Premier League and was able to manage 23 appearances in the last campaign.
