Barnsley head coach Darrell Clarke has threatened his players after they got annihilated 7-0 by Manchester United in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night at Old Trafford.
A brace apiece from resurgent Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Christian Eriksen and a spot kick from Anthony condemned the League One side to their joint-second heaviest-ever defeat.
It would be the second time that Barnsley will lose to the Premier League giants this season, though the first was against their U21s in August in the English Football League Trophy, otherwise known as the Bristol Street Motors Trophy in August.
The Colliers came into the game in good form, having lost just one out of their last five games, albeit that was in their last clash before last night’s encounter. However, they were blown away by Manchester United.
Clarke wasn’t pleased with his players’ performance and threatened to slap any of them who complained about any Premier League Player.
“If I ever hear of my players telling me Premier League players are poor I’ll be giving them a slap because we were miles off against a team that can absolutely destroy you when you’re not at it,’ Clarke told Sky Sports after the drubbing.”
“They’re a quality team but we’re very disappointed in our performance. We haven’t done ourselves justice. That was my fear tonight coming here.”
Barnsley will be looking to put their disappointment behind them when they face Burton Albion in their next League One game at the Pirelli Stadium.
Despite being placed 7th on the standings, they sit just three points behind three points table-toppers Wrexham.
