Arsenal have announced that Mikel Arteta has signed a new long-term deal which will keep him at the Emirates till 2027.
The Spanish tactician became the club’s manager in 2019 after Unai Emery was sacked following a poor run of results and performances.
The former Spanish midfielder won the FA Cup in his first season. Still, Arsenal could only manage to finish 8th in the Premier League, finishing behind Wolverhampton Wanderers, Tottenham and Leicester City.
The progress looked slow initially, but Arsenal has re-established themselves as one of the best teams in the English top-flight and Europe.
Last season, the North London side finished just two points adrift of Manchester City, recording their most-ever wins in a single campaign.
Interestingly, the former Spain international boasts a 59% win ratio as the Gunners, the most of any manager to have won, spearheaded 50 games for the club, including Arsene Wenger.
Speaking after Arteta inked a new deal, Arsenal’s Co-Chairman, Josh Kroenke said
We’re delighted to have extended Mikel’s contract.
“Mikel is a dynamic and passionate manager, who is relentless in the pursuit of excellence. He has a deep understanding of Arsenal’s values, and since joining us as Head Coach in December 2019, he has taken the team to another level in an Arsenal way.
“There is a great collective team spirit at the club, and with the strong relationships we hold between us and belief in what we do, we look forward with excitement and confidence, as we continue our aim – to win together.” Kroenke told the club’s website
After coming close to winning the league twice in succession, Arteta would be expected to end Arsenal’s long with for the Premier League title.
It will also be hoped that he can lead them to their first-ever UEFA Champions League trophy.
