“I Gave It My All”: Lionel Messi’s Emotional Goodbye to Argentina
There really isn’t much left to say about Lionel Messi.
After more than 20 years wearing the Argentina shirt, the greatest player of his generation has finally said goodbye to international football.
Messi has announced his retirement from the national team at the age of 39.
And what a journey it has been.
From the teenager who made his Argentina debut in 2005, to the captain who finally lifted the World Cup in Qatar, Messi has lived through almost every emotion football can give you.
There were the painful defeats.
The Copa América final losses.
The 2014 World Cup final against Germany.
The criticism.
The tears.
And then, eventually, the moments every Argentina fan had been waiting for.
Messi won the Copa América in 2021, followed it with the Finalissima in 2022, and then came the one that meant more than anything.
The World Cup.
The dream finally came true
For years, the biggest question hanging over Messi’s international career was simple.
Could he win something with Argentina?
He had already won almost everything at club level. He had the Ballon d’Ors, the Champions League trophies, the league titles and countless individual awards.
But with Argentina, it just wouldn’t happen.
Until Qatar.
Messi led Argentina through an unforgettable 2022 World Cup campaign, scoring seven goals and producing some of the most memorable moments of his career.
Then came the final against France.
A match that had absolutely everything.
Argentina eventually lifted the trophy after a dramatic penalty shootout, with Messi finally holding the World Cup above his head.
That picture will never be forgotten.
He kept going
The amazing thing about Messi’s story is that he didn’t stop there.
He returned for another Copa América and helped Argentina win the tournament again in 2024.
Then, somehow, he went back for another World Cup.
At 39 years old, Messi played in his sixth World Cup and helped Argentina reach the final once again.
This time, there was no fairytale ending.
Spain won 1-0.
But even in defeat, Messi had already done more than enough.
“I always gave it my all”
In his retirement message, Messi made something very clear.
He gave everything he had to Argentina.
Not just during the years when the trophies finally arrived, but also during the difficult years when nothing seemed to go right.
He fought for the shirt.
He carried the expectations of an entire country.
And he kept coming back.
Now, he believes the time has come to step aside and allow the next generation to take their chance.
His numbers tell only part of the story.

Argentina’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player.
But Messi was never really about the numbers.
It was the feeling.

The country eventually embraced him completely.
Now they have to say goodbye.
Messi will continue playing for Inter Miami, but the sight of him walking out in the famous blue and white shirt will be no more.
Football will move on.
Argentina will move on.
A new generation will take over.
But there will only ever be one Lionel Messi.
He gave Argentina everything.
He suffered with them.
