Josh Cavallo, the first openly-gay professional football player has got engaged to his partner, Leighton Morrell on the pitch for Adelaide United!
Cavallo, 24, has played for Adelaide since 2021, playing in midfield / left back for the side.
He went viral later in the year that he joined Adelaide United when he came out via an emotional video on social media, making him the first ever gay professional footballer to do so.
Since his brave decision to show himself to the footballing world, he has become an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and has praised the swathes of support he received after he had made his decision.
His decision has seemingly inspired other players to do the same, with Czech Republic midfielder Jakob Jankto also coming out in February last year.
Cavallo and his now fiancé Morrell, have been happily dating for several years, being spotted only last year at New York Pride together.
The Australian baller recruited the help of his Adelaide United team mates in order to set up the surprise proposal to Morrell at Cooper’s Stadium.
Cavallo took to social media once more to celebrate his engagement, saying:
“Starting this year with my fiancé. Mr & Mr Coming soon. Thank you Adelaide United for helping set up this surprise.”
“You’re endless support has meant so much to me. You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible, and encouraged me to live everyday of my life authentically. It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started.”
Alongside these words were photographs of Cavallo going down on one knee, whilst his emotional partner covered his face with his hands in shock, alongside a snap of the newly-engaged couple smiling together and flaunting their new rings!
