DEBATE: Will Erling Haaland smash the Premier League top-scorer record this season?

It will come as no surprise to fans of the English Premier League that Erling Haaland is the bookie’s favourite to become top scorer this season.

With a current goal average of 1.89 per 90 minutes played in the Prem from just 9 games, and a WHOPPING 2.21 average in the Champions League from just 3 games – the young Norwegian seems well on track to set the bar for what a top scorer’s goal tally should look like at the end of a 38 game season in the English top-flight.

In fact, if he were to carry on with this astonishing goal average for Manchester City this season, he would be finishing his 2022/2023 campaign with an unbelievable 71 goals to his name if he played every minute – or 67 if we include his current average game time.

This would be almost TWICE the number of goals scored by current record holders Andy Cole & Alan Shearer (34 goals each) during their respective record-setting campaigns in 1993/1994 (Cole) & 1994/1995 (Shearer). And it pays to remember that Cole and Shearer each had 42 games during their Premier League campaigns – compared to the modern format of 38!

In fact, if Haaland does achieve these incredible figures, he will become the first player to finally best William Ralph ‘Dixie’ Dean’s remarkable 60 goals from 39 games in the English top-tier, during his 1927/1928 season – a record that is only discounted on account of it being set before the official English Premier League was formed!

If he continues his average across ALL competitions, and Man City make the finals of each competition they play, Haaland would achieve 109 goals across the board – or 121 if he was never subbed!

SO WE ASK YOU – Will Haaland smash the Prem top-scorer record (maybe even including Dixie Dean’s?!)
