Argentina take on the Netherlands tonight in their 2022 World Cup quarter final. Here’s a quick look at both sides’ journeys to this exciting clash…

Argentina

Argentina didn’t get off to the ideal start to their 2022 World Cup campaign, after losing 2-1 to Saudi Arabia in their opening match on the 22nd November.

Messi & Co did however make amends for their shock end to a 36-game unbeaten streak, by earning 2-0 victories in both their remaining group stage matches. The first being against Mexico, and then Poland 4 days later.

These victories took them through as top of the group, ahead of their last victims, Poland.

Argentina then went on to defeat Australia 2-1 in their knockout stage matchup, finding their way to a clash with the Netherlands tonight at Lusail Stadium.

They have created 58 attempts on goal so far this tournament, with 26 of those being on target, and 7 being converted. They have also enjoyed 2 clean sheets and 2442 completed passes. Their goal difference so far this tournament is +4.

Netherlands

The Netherlands faired slightly better than their upcoming opponents in their group stage of this World Cup. They beat both Senegal and Qatar 2-0, whilst drawing 1-1 with Ecuador to go through as top of group A.

They have achieved 35 attempts on goal, with 14 of those having hit the target, and 8 having been converted. They have also seen 1885 passes completed so far and have a goal difference of +6.

Quarter final

So, the stats are looking to provide us with an exciting matchup of talent for the second of this tournament’s quarter-finals. Argentina have given more output towards goal so far, but Netherlands have certainly made more of their chances going into this one.

There is no hope now for a Argentina vs Brazil South American showdown in the semis, but will Messi and Co still do enough to see them through to the next stage of this tournament?
