What was supposed to be a Champions League qualification night ended with absolute chaos at the Groupama Stadium. 🍿

Fenerbahçe had just beaten Lyon 2-1 to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory and book their place in the Champions League league phase.

But the football was quickly forgotten.

As the Turkish side celebrated their huge win, tensions exploded between the two teams, with Mattéo Guendouzi finding himself right at the centre of the madness. 😳

Guendouzi lights the fuse

Guendouzi already had plenty of history with the Lyon supporters.

The Fenerbahçe midfielder previously played for Marseille, Lyon’s biggest rivals, and was heavily booed by the home crowd.

During the game, he was reportedly seen making a middle-finger gesture towards the Lyon supporters.

Then came the final whistle.

With Fenerbahçe celebrating their qualification, Guendouzi appeared to provoke the Lyon crowd again, including making a gesture associated with Marseille rapper Jul.

He was also heard shouting:

🗣️ “Allez l’OM!”

That was enough to send the temperature through the roof.

And then… it kicked off

Lyon players and staff confronted Guendouzi and a huge scuffle broke out on the pitch.

Players from both sides rushed into the chaos as coaching staff desperately tried to separate everyone.

But somehow, things got even worse.

As the players headed towards the tunnel, the confrontation continued.

Footage from the stands appears to show a Lyon supporter jumping down near the players’ tunnel and going towards Guendouzi.

The situation then descended into a full melee involving players, staff and security. Reports describe punches, slaps and players chasing each other through the tunnel area.

Fenerbahçe’s Ederson was also seen getting involved as the situation escalated.

Lyon left with nothing

For Lyon, the night couldn’t have ended much worse.

They had been knocked out of the Champions League after Fenerbahçe held on for a 2-1 win, meaning they will now play in the Europa League instead.

For Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, it was a massive night.

They are back in the Champions League league phase after a long wait, while Lyon are left to pick up the pieces after a hugely frustrating night.

And the final scenes certainly won’t help calm things down.

Corentin Tolisso admitted afterwards that the incidents were disappointing and said they were not a good reflection of football or Lyon.
