BREAKING: Mason Greenwood charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour & assault

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, using controlling & coercive behaviour AND assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Greenwood was arrested on Saturday 15th October 2022, as a result of reports from his alleged victim that he had breached his bail conditions by contacting them. This was confirmed by senior Old Trafford officials on Saturday morning, however, no further comment has been made by the club as police continue their investigation.

The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge the 21-year-old forward, who will appear at Manchester Magistrates Court on Monday the 17th of October. Greenwood hasn’t made an appearance for Manchester United since January, after the club suspended him following his arrest on suspicion of the aforementioned rape, controlling & coercive behaviour, and assault charges.

At the time of his initial arrest, he was also questioned in regard to claims that he was making threats to kill.

Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for Crown Prosecution Service North West, Janet Potter, said the following:

“ The crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

All three counts relate to the same complainant. Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.

The defendant’s first court appearance will take place on Monday 17th October at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court. The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which  could in any way prejudice those proceedings.”

Greenwood’s suspension with United remains as he awaits his trial.
